Plastic Straw Ban Samurai Promotions Bespoke Branded Merchandise

A hot topic of 2018 was the announcement of the looming single-use plastic ban in the UK as part of the Government’s 25-year Environment Plan. Scheduled to become the law as early as this year, it will be gradually phased in across the UK. We are sure it won’t be long before the ban is a global initiative.

It’s been predicted that by 2050 there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish! And one of the worst offenders is the plastic straw, did you know that over 8.5 billion plastic straws are thrown away each year in the UK? An overwhelming more than 150 million tonnes of plastic in the world’s oceans is causing damage to thousands of marine and millions of bird lives each year, so all of us at Samurai Promotions are firmly behind this government initiative!

The discussions around the single-use plastic ban has already seen many venues, suppliers and some big brands opting for paper alternatives or no straws at all – but do you know how hard it is to drink a mojito without a straw?! Don’t worry – we have been working with our custom drinkware suppliers to come up with eco-friendly straw solutions to support your corporate social responsibility plans.

Metal straws

Made from aluminium, stainless steel or titanium, metal straws are a very popular alternative to plastic. Metal straws are suitable for most cups, can be made straight or with a bend, long lasting, easily cleaned with special brushes and are dishwasher safe too. Plus, the benefit of a metal straw is how effective they look when your branding is added, by printing, laser engraving or embossing into the straw itself, or alternatively with the addition of metal discs with your branding on.

Paper straws

No longer the soggy cousin of the plastic straw, paper is a viable alternative. Effective when branded, fully recyclable and considerably longer lasting than they used to, you can’t go far wrong with a paper straw.

Glass straws

Once considered a more luxury option due to its fragility when compared with metal and paper options, a glass straw has the ability to make more of a statement as you can really have fun with the glass designs, although you shouldn’t overlook the equal elegance of plain glass. Glass straws can even withstand the dishwasher which has proven its worth as a genuine alternative to plastic.

Bamboo straws

A sustainable and biodegradable material, often less popular due to the idea of drinking through a natural product, however as these are specially treated they shouldn’t alter the taste. Reusable, easy to wash and generally a great solution for all takeaway beverages, plus they are equally as easy to brand as metal.

Edible straws

Although not reusable, edible straws are popular for their novelty, variety of options and opportunities for branding. Plus, you can really have fun with the flavor combinations!

Silicone straws

Low cost, lightweight and practical, silicone straws can come in any colour combination so can perfectly fit within your brand guidelines. An ever popular material due to its durability and ease of cleaning, plus adding your logo looks particularly effective.

Don’t forget about the packaging! Steer clear of individually wrapped in plastic, or go for paper wrapped if you really need to provide your straws wrapped separately. We can provide a range of boxed/packaging options for your straws, which all fully comply with any CSR strategy.
